The Energy Independence Bill has a radical sounding name…but will Red Ed deliver?

“The Energy Independence Bill is the next step in delivering on our mission – giving us the power we need to drive forward with clean power to cut bills, support families out of fuel poverty and deliver well-paid secure jobs for a generation of young people.”

UK unveils Energy Independence Bill

London commits in King's Speech to cut bills and ‘take back control’ of energy

reNEWS - Renewable Energy News

#Starmer had a #GreenPledge that he spectacularly dropped before being elected.

Because suddenly #Renewables , #Retrofit and #ClimateAction were too expensive to actually do in government or did chasing #Reform ‘s coattails mean conveniently #Labour no longer needed to care?

On Friday they realised they lost whole swathes of voters across the country they’d taken for granted. Now they want them back less than a week later.

Were there ever any workable plans? Have these been resurrected?

I cannot convey to you the level of hope followed quickly by disappointment for those working in #Retrofit when #Starmer walked into Downing Street.

#Labour had 14 years to work up, refine, plan and then role out their vision for retrofitting the country’s housing stock…but there was basically just tumbleweed.

What they have belatedly committed to is a fraction of what was deemed to be required in 2024.

But hey they gave everyone just over a £100 off their energy bills…and now what?

‘The energy independence bill, announced as part of the king’s speech, aims to get the UK off the “fossil fuel rollercoaster” with clean, homegrown power and electrification of the wider economy, officials said.
It includes measures to cut energy bills, require landlords to invest in home upgrades, pave the way to create a dedicated “warm homes agency” to deliver a £15bn programme of home electrification and provide for targeted support for vulnerable and low-income families’

This is not new.

@JugglingWithEggs It's a direct copy from the Tory playbook. Announce the same thing multiple times and pretend each is new.

@OneInterestingFact

I have to agree. We have been promised that landlords will be forced to make rental properties more energy efficient for a decade…but it’s all just words, no action or enforcement.
