Note: this is a very off-the-cuff tier list, using speed as the main qualifier, but the article explains exceptions to that as it goes on.

Been using it on my laptop for a few weeks and it's been great. Switched my PC to it last week.

It's a minimal distro though, so don't expect to just install a desktop environment and be done, you may have to do some work. (KDE and Gnome may do a lot of it for you though)

Hey now, KDE is great for an office environment and folks who aren't computer nerds.

Gnome can go smoke its own butt, I guess.
Ok, ok, I guess you can use Gnome to get iPad kids onto linux, but euuuuuurgghhhhhhhh!
So many terrible UI design decisions and terrible officious attitudes in one project.

@rl_dane
Last time I used gnome was gnome 2... that was decent.
Gnome 3 onwards can go do one.
KDE is reasonable I guess, just farrrr too "Windows"-y for my liking. At least it does have every-setting-you-could-possibly-ever-want in the settings though.

I really liked Gnome 2.

I've tried both Gnome 2 (Ubuntu 10.04, I think) and modern Mate side by side in vms, and I actually preferred Gnome 2. The theme was a bit more contrasty.

Heck, I miss RH's old #BlueCurve

Oh, for sure. I was just talking about what was default or selectable in the default install between Ubuntu 2010.04-(ish) and the most recent Ubuntu Mate at the time.

I suppose if someone really wanted to, they could just yoink the theme files off the classic Ubuntu iso. ;)

Honestly, with a decent launcher like #rofi, Mate could be quite a nice little environment.
