We saw a performance of the musical « Le Roi Soleil » (The Sun King) last weekend. It tells the life of Louis XIV, particularly the Fronde.

And so I wondered, «What if the Fronde had succeeded?»

It might not be the turning point in history that everyone thinks of, and yet, if the Fronde had succeeded:

➡️ No king by divine right
➡️ A much less centralized France
➡️ The beginning of parliamentarism?

➡️ No Versailles
➡️ No Le Nôtre, Molière, Lully, La Fontaine…
➡️ No Schönbrunn Palace or St. Petersburg
➡️ Far fewer wars
➡️ No Bourbons in Spain?
➡️ Alsace not French
➡️ No revocation of the Edict of Nantes, therefore a multi-faith France
➡️ A more industrious France

➡️ Probably no French Revolution, and therefore
➡️ No universal system of measurement
➡️ Nor Napoleon to spread it throughout Europe
➡️ No disappearance of the Holy Roman Empire
➡️ A completely different unification of the Germanic world
➡️ And in any case, not in the Hall of Mirrors
➡️ No loss of Alsace-Lorraine, and therefore no desire for revenge in 1914

"Nor Napoleon to spread..."

No code civil?
Oh...

@art_of_goulwenr

No Lully?🎼 🎶

Oh!!! 🫢

@haiku_shelf well he would probably have existed but Louis XIV wouldn’t have been such a sponsor for arts so even if Lully had been a musician maybe we wouldn’t know him
