Y'all already heard that Canada has decided that Canadian citizen can pass, retroactively, from parent to child for more than one generation -- so that if your parent, or grandparent, or great-grandparent was Canadian, you can get Canadian citizenship. (And if you didn't know that, look at https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/dual-citizenship-eh-under-new-law-millions-of-americans-may-now-also-be-considered-canadian and https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/canadian-citizenship/become-canadian-citizen/eligibility/already-citizen.html)

But the NEW news is, Canada is moving citizenship applications from transgender USians to the top of the queue. So -- if you're trans, you have Canadian ancestry, and you think that you'd like to be Canadian, get that application in!

More about the trans part: https://www.cicnews.com/2026/05/canada-is-fast-tracking-citizenship-certificates-for-trans-americans-0575258.html

EDIT, 14 May 2026: Many folks have posted to me to clarify that there isn't special processing specifically for trans US citizens. Instead, anyone can apply for "urgent" processing, and there are many reasons why an application might be considered urgent. Applicants need to explain why they need urgent processing. (It's not like there's a check-box to say "trans in US".) But trans people with Canadian ancestry have applied for, and received, urgent processing of their citizenship applications.

Dual citizenship, eh? Under new law, millions of Americans may now also be considered Canadian

A recent change to Canada's requirements has led to a surge in applications from its southern neighbor.

@AnotherJen we're crying. this is going to save lives. we didn't seriously expect this kind of help.

(it doesn't affect us personally but it will affect our community, you know?)

@AnotherJen canada sure looks more and more like it got its shit together! *teary eyed*
who knew politicians could actually care for the safety of trans* beings,,,,
@AnotherJen I don't know how I feel about my country being a "backup plan" but I am super glad that the feds are processing trans folks as urgent because, well, it is.
@ianrogers @AnotherJen It’s also a fast-track for smart, educated, skilled people to GTFO of the impending christofascist hellscape.

@AnotherJen

A government actually doing something to help transgender people?

Holy crap I'm actually tearing up.

@oddtail Canadians are not all of one mind about this, but I think many of them recognize uncomfortable similarities to dangerous scapegoating of minorities a century ago, and feel they should be Doing Something about it. This is at least a way to offer SOME relief, for some people, without major (and potentially disruptive) action on their side. I'm sympathetic to their desire to avoid a major public throw-down over this, because no one can predict what the outcome of that would be.

@wesdym @oddtail

It’s worth saying that being transgender is one among a number of rationales for urgent processing that is accepted. Some relate to at-risk groups while others are practical (university program start date, job offer start date).

@AnotherJen

My uncle had been into genealogy and there's no Canadian ancestors in my past.

Bummer. I'd be willing to learn O Canada in French and English. I already can say aboot and eh. :)

@w_b From what I've read Canada is really trying to attract folks from the US. If you're really interested, check their govt web pages regarding immigration.
@AnotherJen @w_b I don't know if I'd say "really" - it's just literal low-hanging fruit. (And I say fair game, given how much the US loves to poach Canadian talent.)

@anyGould @AnotherJen

Not sure they wouldn't be interested in me. A bit older and retired. I think the like people that will contribute to society. Not sure I have much to offer besides my wonderful personality.

@w_b @AnotherJen I have a 4x great grandfather who was apparently born in Canada. I think I'll have a lot of trouble proving that though.
@stinerman You can hire a genealogist to trace it, though I don't know what that costs.

@w_b @AnotherJen hey, I can be your dad.

Ten bucks is ten bucks eh.

@w_b @AnotherJen "Sorry, aboot and eh are only 2/3 of the required Canadian English fluency."

@raganwald @AnotherJen

Does "double double" count as one word or two?

@w_b @AnotherJen Not sure, but I like that it's also self-descriptive:

If you double “double,” you indeed have a “double double.”

@raganwald @w_b @AnotherJen Were you counting the ‘sorry’?

@AnotherJen Sadly, I apparently have zero Canadian ancestry. We have NON-ancestral relatives who became Canadian, but none who are ancestors.

Canada needs to revise its asylum rules, because the ones they have now were adopted in 2002, before the current dangerous insanity going on in the US.
