#ThePlaylist is back, bothering your ears like a tiny mosquito, but one that brings nothing but the finest vibes.

This week our theme is:

Lord Sir David Attenborough

And it has to be said, some of the suggestions have come from straight out of the left field. Which is exactly how we like it.

The tracks played this week, in case you couldn't hear me because my mic was muffled by gorillas.

#ThePlaylist

This week's nationals treasure, may they last twice as long as Lord Sir David, 200 years old, dragging their frail carcasses around, praying for the end, but too beloved to be allowed to expire.

@DJDarren

'Our Lips Are Sealed' - Fun Boy 3

'After The Goldrush' - Neil Young

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@sodslawyer Will the other 33 be forthcoming?
@DJDarren Yeah I'm just drip-feeding you (so to speak) over the next coupla days.
@sodslawyer You can feed me your drip for as long as you need.

@DJDarren I'll also throw in

'The Things You Said' by Depeche Mode

3/35 ;)

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren oh, I'm choosing CanCon violence this week

Snow - Informer

Snow - Informer (Official Music Video) [4K Remaster]

You're watching the official 4K music video for Snow - "Informer" from the album '12 Inches of Snow'. "Informer" is sampled and Snow is featured in Daddy Yan...

@giflian Oof, she went there!

(and we loved it)

@DJDarren for something more classic (1980)

Rough Trade - High School Confidential

@DJDarren according to Wikipedia, seeing this song performed at the Juno Awards showed a young k.d. lang she could be an out musician. Hurray!

@DJDarren I Heard It Through The Grapevine - Gladys Knight & the Pips

Rumours of War - Billy Bragg

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren And the semi-obligatory HMHB suggestion: Secret Gig

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren before anyone else gets it in:

Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way (for being the best song off Rumours and one of the best songs ever written)

And from Papa Irish:

Gin Blossoms - Found Out About You (about learning some troubling things about someone via rumours)

Might throw a couple more over later.

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren Okay, here’s some suggestions from me that have nothing to do with Fleetwood Mac. Two of them are k-pop but they both slap so I have no regrets.

KARD - Rumor
Billlie - the rumor (yes, Billlie has three Ls)
Stone Sour - A Rumor of Skin
Måneskin feat. Tom Morello - Gossip!

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren

- Here Comes the Rumour Mill by Young Knives

- Secret by The Pierces (“two can keep a secret if one of them is dead”

- The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret by QotSA

- Standing in the Way of Control by The Gossip

Dr Caitlin Swisslet suggests:

- I Write Sins Not Tragedies by Panic at the Disco

- I heard it through the grapevine by Marvin

- Somebody Told me by the Killers

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@swisslet @DJDarren Dr S beat me to The Killers.
@Nickiquote @DJDarren what can I say? Smart and a killer.

@DJDarren this is also a splendid opportunity for the peerless Careless Whisper by George Michael. Ah. Such a talented boy. What a saxophone break.

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@swisslet @DJDarren I thought of the Panic! At The Disco track too. Still a banger, honestly.
@astronomerritt @DJDarren it really is. 2006! It’s twenty bloody years old.
@swisslet @DJDarren That album still holds up imo. So many albums from that time period absolutely did not 😆

@DJDarren

Shipbuilding. It’s just a rumour that was spread around town…

Will accept Elvis Costello, Robert Wyatt, Suede, The Unthanks, June Tabor or whoever. Lots of lovely versions of a brilliant, powerful song.

Robert Wyatt - Shipbuilding

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

@Nickiquote @DJDarren oh! Great choice. A magnificent song.
@Nickiquote @DJDarren yes I would second Robert Wyatt. Remember seeing that on the Old Grey Whistle Test. I feel like a dusty fossil just typing this.

@DJDarren

Pixies - I'm Amazed (but you must include the spoken word intro!)

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren And seeing as how that one is very short I'll add...

Bob Dylan - If You See Her Say Hello

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren Going straight in with Depeche Mode’s ‘Breathe’. 🖤
🎶 I heard a rumor
They travel far
You know what it's like
The way people are …

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren
Marvin Gaye - I Heard it Through the Grapevine
#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren

Thin Lizzy - Don't Believe A Word

Bob Dylan - Tell me that isn't true

A late addition that I like but not as much as the Thin Lizzy one:

The Zombies - She's not there

#thePlaylistSuggestion

@artnacrea @DJDarren Oh, good call, on both counts!

@DJDarren @sodslawyer #ThePlaylistSuggestion
My first thought, other than one that's already been suggested a few times, was

Gil Scott-Heron - Johannesburg

because it's literally about unconfirmed rumours: They tell me that our brothers over there are defying the Man/And we don’t know for sure because the news we get is unreliable

Was tempted to leave it at that, because it's obviously the best suggestion I'm going to come up with. But here are another couple of songs that came to mind while my mind was wandering through the idea of gossip as an interpretation of the theme:

Pulp - Have You Seen Her Lately?

The Pipettes - Guess Who Ran Off With The Milkman?

@DJDarren #ThePlaylistSuggestion
I've been thinking this morning, can I add something? Not another song, a clarification.

Gil Scott-Heron recorded and released Johannesburg quite a few times in his career. And I really want to stress that I'm suggesting the original, from the album From South Africa To South Carolina - which I think is credited to Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson.

Other opinions are available, of course, but to my mind this has both the most insistent music and the freshest-sounding vocals. Also, later versions tend to be longer.

I'm not entirely sure how available that album is on the big streaming services so the particular recording is here if it helps https://youtu.be/-KkQiCMdMH4

Gil Scott-Heron - Johannesburg

YouTube
@DJDarren (I mention this because I know there was discussion last night about different versions of songs, and when I was checking how long Johannesburg was, the first version I came across was a six minute jazzy recording which I don't think is anything like as good as the original.)
@DJDarren @sodslawyer Arabian Nights by Siouxsie and the Banshees. “I heard a rumour…”

@DJDarren @sodslawyer #ThePlaylistSuggestion

Gaaah, too many good options, again! I think I like these the best, though:

🍇 The Slits - I Heard It Through The Grapevine
💔 Maxine Brown - Oh No Not My Baby
⛪ Abyssinian Baptist Choir - Said I Wasn't Gonna Tell Nobody

That last one probably wants trimming a bit, if I'm honest. And I also wanted to give an honourable mention to a kick-ass track which is just far too long to be reasonable:

🎤 Mad Kap & Daddy Freddy - Ph*uck What Ya Heard

@daveybot Given how many suggestions I've had for the Marvin Gaye version, it would be quite funny to play the Slits cover. @sodslawyer

@DJDarren @sodslawyer I'll be honest: those were my thoughts exactly!

...But also it's a hell of a version.

@daveybot @DJDarren There's also Creedence Clearwater Revival's version which is great, but is about 11 minutes long if I recall.
@sodslawyer @daveybot @DJDarren yeah, I was gonna suggest that, but it’s long even by my standards 😂
@WiteWulf @daveybot @DJDarren Some have high standards, others have long standards.

@DJDarren @sodslawyer #ThePlaylistSuggestion

Marvin Gaye - Heard It Through the Grapevine

@DJDarren @sodslawyer Brownstone - grapevyne, which is nice and smooth. lol
Fleetwood Mac - Second Hand News, or anything else off Rumours.
#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren @sodslawyer Some #AusMusic #ThePlaylistSuggestion (s) on the theme of rumour(s).

"Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls" released an album called "Gossip" in 1986.

The two best tracks are

"Before too long"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LerRV-CGeFU

and

"Darling it hurts"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3zT--U512I

Away from Paul Kelly, Neil Finn has performed as part of Fleetwood Mac, and Crowded House are clearly Australian, as they were formed in #Melbourne and 2/3 members are Australian.

so the Crowded House Song i'd nominate that hasn't been played before is

"Don't dream it's over"

Just going with my first thought in the end
Stereophonics - A thousand trees

Apologies for pushing it on time. Because they’ve been stuck in my head all week:

Beautiful South - Don’t Marry Her

@DJDarren @sodslawyer #ThePlaylistSuggestion

Does your fancy script pick up suggestions if you edit in the hashtag after the fact? Asking for a muppet.

@DJDarren

@FloatingOnion It does appear to have.

@DJDarren Late Kate-ing like a late Kate, and have just reached the Jack Rundell track, suggested IIRC by @WiteWulf? Brilliant.

Gawds bless this show.

@daveybot It certainly is mental. @WiteWulf
