Home made calibration #lab.

Let's see how accurate this 58 year old neglected #sextant is.

@alper You're good at finding very weird toys!
@alper I am very impressed, although I still maintain that the errors from taking a sight from a small craft deck would exceed any likely misalignment errors.
Although... When Bligh was put into his overloaded 7m open boat he asked for his sextant. One of the mutineers said if Bligh's wish were granted they would all hang. It was and three of them did.
A 3500NM voyage in 7m open boat.

@G8GDS Bligh's voyage is an impressive feat to me too.

I agree that there are many greater sources of error outside of sextant. Yet this particular sextant that I have was already crooked from the factory. 1973 calibration dictates -12 to -20' errors from the start. I am tying to figure out if those values are still correct and not changed during it's time unused in a box. Sadly my lab attempts failed. Either my math is borked or measurements. Probably I have to take many sights and compare 😓

@alper I'm not suggesting you shouldn't fix it up, on the contrary it will be an heroic project.
I'm jealous, actually: 40 years ago I understood the underlying spherical trig. and could wrangle it like a pro. Now I don't.
