Dr. Q Manivannan, a transgender and non-binary Indian immigrant was elected as a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for JK Rowling's constituency. They also are not a British citizen, nor even a permanent resident. They were eligible to stand for election as a Commonwealth citizen.

Oh dear don't spread this she might see and get angry!

F&ck TERFS and fascism!

@MikeDunnAuthor she won't see it, because (thank God) she's not on the fediverse, or at least not on any part of it permitted to federate with us
@MikeDunnAuthor wait, how do you become an MSP if you aren't a permanent resident? What happens if they leave the country?
@scarlett
Are you asking seriously?

@scarlett @MikeDunnAuthor
You become an MSP by being resident in Scotland and either not needing leave to remain in the UK, or holding any such leave to remain (s16 Scotland Act 1998 as amended), and being elected.

If they choose to leave, that would imply resignation from being MSP. If they are forced to leave, there would be no such implication.

@HighlandLawyer @scarlett @MikeDunnAuthor
Thank you. I understand this and the question now, too.

@MikeDunnAuthor Oh, I didn't know they were Lady Voldemort's rep now. Hilarious.

Her neighbors must think her a right cockwomble.

@linuxandyarn
A dreadful douchecanoe.

@MikeDunnAuthor minor correction: they were elected from the regional list, not the constituency (it's designed to mitigate the "winner takes all" element of first-past-the-post constituency elections, so if you don't win in a constituency, people can vote for your party and at a regional level)

Still great to see Tamil representation and gender diversity hitting Holyrood!

@MikeDunnAuthor would be "tragic" if she died of a stroke 🤣
@MikeDunnAuthor what? So a canadian could just show up in scotland and run for MSP? Hmm.
@MikeDunnAuthor I hope this starts a tradition of J K Rowling's district only ever being represented by trans and non-binary electeds.
