The EU Commission is officially revising the Water Framework Directive (WFD) to ease permitting obstacles for the extractive industry. In an answer to MEP @[email protected] (S&D), the Commission cites global competition and the need to meet 2030 targets under the Critical Raw Materials Act.
The pivot is sparking controversy. Luena challenged the Commission over favouring mining projects, questioning whether the debate is being unduly influenced by industrial interests rather than civil society and science. An industry-dominated roundtable in Stockholm was recently rescheduled.
Regarding the WFD, the debate over balancing economic security with environmental protection is just heating up. @[email protected] / @[email protected] / @[email protected] #EUWaterPolicy #CriticalRawMaterials #EuropeanCommission #WaterResilience #Sustainability
