The pivot is sparking controversy. Luena challenged the Commission over favouring mining projects, questioning whether the debate is being unduly influenced by industrial interests rather than civil society and science. An industry-dominated roundtable in Stockholm was recently rescheduled.
Regarding the WFD, the debate over balancing economic security with environmental protection is just heating up.
