The 25 Best Space Movies Of All-Time, Ranked

YouTube
@mookie I wouldn't say I miss it but I haven't seen 18.

@mookie

Haven’t seen 4,5,13,17,20,21,24

Picked up 22 a few months ago on the list.

4 (Interstellar) and 21 (The Martian) are two of my favorite films (both I rate 10 out of 10)

24 (Pitch Black) is a really great mix of sci-fi and horror.

All three movies above are well worth a watch.

@mookie

I’ll check them out. Aware of all of them. It’s funny, GOTG Vol 2 was one of my favorites, but I didn’t see it in the theater. I didn’t see it until I had my ACL replacement on 2018 a year later.

Then, I watched it several times in the next week. Wish I’d watched it sooner.

Will definitely check out.

@mookie @davidhmccoy

Some people hate #Interstellar but I liked it (especially the ending). I liked #Martian & #PitchBlack, as well, but I wouldn't give any of them a 10. 🤷🏻‍♂️

BTW, I have all 3 of the Riddick movies in my DVD collection.

I saw Interstellar in the theaters and walked out of the theater hating the movie. But after a few rewatches, I really got the movie and it’s become my favorite of Nolan’s films.

@mookie I've not seen three of them.
@mookie why is star wars on the list? Anyway. I am a scifi tragic and I have seen all of these and most the star wars film and tv (except the acolyte and some of the animated ones)
I wouldn't put all of Star Wars on there, but I do thing Rogue One would be the one Star Wars movie that should be on the list.
@mookie Ah. I thought the idea was this list were things that are better than star wars 😬

@mookie

Had to check on a couple but I've seen all of them & have a DVD copy of almost all of them.

@mookie I think the only one I haven't seen is number 25, 2010. Someone mentioned Arrival. The soundtrack to that is outstanding, what a loss Johann Johannsson was 😭
Oh! I did not know that Johann Johannsson had past!

2010 is a weird movie, it's an interesting watch to see how different a sequel can be -- where 2001 treats the audience as intelligent, 2010 feels the need to try to explain everything.
@mookie Ah I see, I am not the biggest movie watcher, give me the book it's based on.
But yeah Johannsson's death was in 2018 😱 how is that 8 years already. I swear the plague has totally screwed my perception of time.
@mookie Fourteen. Quite a bit considering I don't really care for Space SciFi.
Alien is incredibly good.
@[email protected]

Alien is so awesome.
@mookie Besides 2001, Wall-e, and Alien, my favourite SciFi films are absent from this list. Probably because they are all not *space* SciFi: Blade Runner, 12 monkeys, Brazil, Ghost in the Shell (1995 version), possibly Matrix (been a looong time since I last saw it. Dunno if I'll still enjoy it).

@mookie 19/25

Haven't seen: Serenity, Stargate, Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor: Ragnarok, The Last Starfighter, Pitch Black.

@mookie 22.

Nitpick: I don't think "Apollo 13" qualifies as sci-fi. 😉

@mookie

As sci-fi is my favorite genre, I have seen all of these.

Of those listed, Event Horizon is the only one I didn't enjoy.

I question the inclusion of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock over Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country. The latter I thought was more entertaining than the former.

Also thought Chronicles of Riddick was the best of the "Pitch Black" films.

The following are missing, but are worth a mention...

Oblivion
Star Trek (2009)
Moon
Solaris
Galaxy Quest
Sunshine
Gravity
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Ender's Game
Avatar
Space Balls

and although it's not the greatest, it's still a guilty pleasure for me...

The Black Hole

I love sci-fi also!

I rewatched Event Horizon a while ago -- the only other time I watched it was in the theaters when it was released (even wrote a review about it in 1997). I did not like it back then, I thought it was "not bad" (according to my notes) when I rewatched it. I ended up rating it 5 out of 10.

Agreed on Star Trek VI!

I liked Chronicles of Riddick, but my favorite of the series is the last one, Riddick. It was lean and focused like the original.

  • Oblivion YES!
  • Star Trek (2009) Yes
  • Moon HELL YES!
  • Solaris Yes
  • Galaxy Quest YES!
  • Sunshine YES!
  • Gravity YES!
  • Rogue One: A Star Wars Story YES!
  • Ender's Game Meh
  • Avatar NO!
  • Space Balls Yes
Event Horizon

Event Horizon a film that can be missed in the theatres and on video.

@mookie

All the Riddick sequels, in my opinion, are better than the original. I had seen Chronicles first, and perhaps that's why it's my favorite among the series. Love the casting.

Ender's Game is one of those films, like Passengers, that has polarized movie-goers. I liked the film. Not a fan of the author or his beliefs though, much like J. K. Rowling.

Avatar was unlike anything I'd ever seen before. The sequel, however, I thought was okay. I haven't seen the most recent one, but plan to eventually watch. Heard it's more of the same.

I will add Project Hail Mary to the list, as I watched it last night. Great movie! 🙂

Not a fan of horror, but I make an exception for some movies such as the Alien series. When it comes to Event Horizon-- I remember they playback a recording of the crew of the Event Horizon, and they're all screaming. Then they ponder what it means.

It's means GET OUT OF THERE! 🙂

Event Horizon is a movie that I didn't enjoy.
