For sale at Bolt Fabric Boutique tomorrow, we present this 1960s Italian beauty that sews like new and leaves modern machines in the dust.

Necchi 537 FA

It sews wonderfully and sneered at the denim we tested it on. Even the buttonhole turned out perfectly the first time.

Evergreen Sewing

@evergreensewing That was the first electric machine I ever sewed on, my mom's about 1970 or so. Prior to that I had only used my grandmother's treadle.

Fantastic machine that will eat anything made today for breakfast.

@W6KME Oh heck yeah it can. And it's so encouraging for new sewists, who can create goofy shit and not know that new machines couldn't take that sort of "abuse".
@evergreensewing Hell, you can hem blue jeans with it, unlike a certain popular "heavy duty" machine sold now. Stuff any beginning sewist would naturally assume a new machine could do.
@W6KME Exactly. Not meeting those expectations is so demotivating. People leave the craft forever because of things like that.
@evergreensewing The entire industry, including companies that were once very trustworthy, has gone to pot. My mother just bought a Janome that very clearly says in the manual that it should never be oiled other than a few external oiling points. The main shaft is still steel turning in two bronze bushings. Those need oil, period. But don't do it! Took me 40 minutes to disassemble far enough to reach the bushings.

@W6KME The new Janomes are BRUTAL to get into. It's almost like they're designed to be thrown away & replaced!

In related news, we get to spend the next few days working solely on newer Janomes. 🙈

@evergreensewing I'm just happy there are still places like yours putting good machines back in people's hands. I hope I get a chance to drop in one day...I just realized how long it's been since I was in Milwaukee. The B-17 was still on the gas station.
@W6KME You may have a hard time dropping by. We don't have our own storefront yet, but once we're profitable we're gonna start looking.
@evergreensewing when my Janome dies, I’m going to have to travel to Portland just get one of your refurbished machines, aren’t I? You do such a lovely job

@inarticulatequilter That's such a kind thing to say, thank you!

Maybe we can find a shipper who can get it to you more efficiently. Unless you need an excuse to visit Portland, in which case we're the enablers you're looking for.
