I am still watching several dramas - kinda - but since it will soon be removed from Netflix, I'm giving #Hwarang a try.
Although I'm not even sure whether I'll be able to finish it before it gets removed.

First episode of #Hwarang was silly; the second episode has a very different mood, very violent, dark and sad.
Maybe that's why I dropped it the first time around?
Finished episode 5 of #Hwarang

Dammit, I can hardly keep them apart when they all wear the same uniform. 😕

The fake brother-sister romance is awkward.
And the forced kiss romance isn't better.

I wish there's be less reverse harem and more bromance/dude teambuilding/shenanigans.

She's like "I'm so glad I have a big brother" - but he's not really her brother. Her brother died a horrible violent death.
And I feel like I'm supposed to be glad about this, because it enables them to be a possible romantic couple. But I just think it's heartbreakingly sad.

Nooo. How bad a physician must you be to let someone pull an arrow out.
Also I had to employ 1.25x speed three times this episode, for awkward romance.
Wasn't the Queen being poisoned?

Some of the editing is a little annoying. I'm sure the flashbacks take up the minutes of an entire episode.

The "warrior boarding school" is a fun setup though.

Oh. I kinda knew that one would die. I'm still crying regardless. 😭

Finished #Hwarang!

I know I kept complaining. And the editing IS a mess sometimes.

But I still quite liked it.

And I think a lot more series should have episodes in the 20s and not 40.

Nobody asked, but I think Su Ho is my favourite of the #Hwarang.

First of all he looked adorable with that half-bang hairdo, or whatever that's called.
Also he wasn't being an unreasonable arsehole to anyone.
The crush on an older woman, though of course doomed, was cute.
And I always love a good sibling relationship (too few of these around in fiction, in my opinion).

For a rather small supporting character he had a surprising amount of complex relationships with different people.
Can we please have more of these, and also for female characters?

#Hwarang is a pretty fun series, and I find it interesting that this kind of training school existed. There are a bunch of them also in The Great Queen Seon Deok, a very painfully long, but pretty interesting series. From the Silla era.
It's on Viki now. Since I'll be travelling for a couple of weeks, I'm kind of looking for a rewatch of something.

@EllenInEdmonton Yes, that's fascinating. I wonder why they're not mentioned more often, it seems like a perfect kdrama theme.

I really liked the rather short length.
It also reminded me a little of Sungkyunkwan Scandal, which I liked a lot.

Yes, most of the sageuks, historical dramas are set in the Joseon era, not nearly as colourful as Silla. The Sungkyunkwan scholars show up in various dramas, often to protest something that the king is doing. Bukchon Village, with the butchers for the school, was off limits to law enforcement, which adds some interesting plots to shows.

The old kingdom Paekche ( Baekje) inspired some nice dramas too. It was ahead of the rest with technical inventions . And health, living near the sea.
@EllenInEdmonton @avradi Watching older Kdrama. If you are able to use YT without the commercials/popups, like on Linux with Firefox or other browser, there is still a lot to find there. Several large Korean studios put their old dramas there, in good quality, with subs in several languages and free to watch.
There is no guarantee :It might be there, or disappear again after a while.
