In the UK, “wind and solar have generated more electricity than fossil fuels for a record 15 months in a row. […] this included a full winter season for the first time in 2025-26.
Yes, that’s right, renewables work in the UK in the winter.

Why do nukebros reply guy to every mention of a renewable milestone with “needs more nuclear”. No it does not. Nuclear power has a pathetic track record.
Nuclear power has added an average of < 3GW capacity per year for the past quarter century, globally.
In 2025 alone the world deployed approximately 600GW in new solar generation capacity that generated 600TWh of additional energy.
Solar capacity 10Xes every 10 years.

Oh. That was me. Sorry. I killed the birds.
I was _HUNGRY_!
"But HOW DO WE MONETISE IT?!!"
<sigh>
@bascule
Imagine people surprised by this. They're fools!
Sure, some locations where winter is very cold, the days get shorter, but the sun can be BRILLIANT in that weather, too. I know because I live in Michigan & sunny winter days can be bright enough to hurt my eyes. Solar power generates easily those days.
What about places where the sun doesn't rise for days? Large batteries were charged on the sunny days & they're supplemented by wind power!

@bascule only 5% of Taiwan's total energy is from solar as of 2024. omg. pathetic.
Solar power contributes 15.29 TWh of generation to the Taiwanese grid, accounting for 5.2% of total electric power generation as of 2024

As of early 2026, Taiwan is a major player in offshore wind power, ranking among the top countries globally in terms of installed capacity.
Key Rankings and Stats:
• Offshore Wind Ranking: Taiwan is considered the 7th-largest generator/installer of offshore wind power globally.
• Asia-Pacific Leader: Taiwan tops the Asia-Pacific region in offshore wind installed capacity.

@TimMaddog @bascule well i would trust AI as much as i trust rolling a dice...but it would interesting to see more stats on wind/solar combined. "considered" by whom? some countries have live webpages showing the output of the country's energy usage/production.
it's sunny all the gosh darned time in Tainan and down south. why isn't it mandatory to put solar on every roof? South Korea just made a rule last year that every single outside parking lot with more than 80 spots has to install solar, not just for new ones either. have to add to existing one. taiwan needs to get its butt into gear. cool we have semi conductors, but this we need energy independence.
i wonder if it's because of TSMC that we can't get our % of renewable usage higher? they require steady power and keep expanding.
this shows that taiwan generated only 9.5% of power by renewables in 2023.

the article about the UK shows they used at leat 50% renewable energy for the past 15 months. taiwan is lagging behind.
i think Taiwan could do much better. energy security should be a national security priority.
@TimMaddog @bascule newer charts...
they break my brain to decode them though.
