For those who might get caught up in the 'Windows sucks, maybe try Linux' thing, you then find that in the Linux world there are battalions fighting over a few apparently unimportant things. The first one is X11 vs Wayland. This vid (nothing to do with me!) does a reasonable job of telling the story since about 1986/7 to now, I think.

That latter is wrong anyway. The major competitor to #systemd was Canonical's Upstart, with sometimes OpenRC as a minor one. van Smoorenburg init+rc was never a serious contender, on #Debian or anywhere else, when the decisions were made.
