UK Gov: "We'll ban under-16s from social media!"

People: "Why?"

UK Gov: "Because it's dangerous for them."

People: "Why?"

UK Gov: "Because of bullying, and algorithms that promote hate."

People: "Have you considered holding the bullies and those who tweak the algorithms responsible?"

UK Gov: "..."

UK Gov: "Well, clearly you're anti-growth and anti-business and anti-Britain and anti-semitic."

@Rhodium103

Some people: "Have you tried regulating social media giants like press and broadcast giants? Liable to lose their licence to operate if they break the rules?"

@cmsdengl @Rhodium103 "Have you tried raise VAT and kill all the poor?" seems more likely from this lot.

People: are adults immune from bullying and algorithms that promote hate then?

UK gov: "..."

UK gov: "you're bullying us, stop it!"

@Rhodium103
Have you considered the possibility that adults can be harmed on social media too
@Rhodium103 always hold the victims and the least powerful ones responsible for damage control.
Works so well in traffic safety, so it’s perfect for social media as well!

@Rhodium103

You obviously don't get it.

A trans girl was murdered by transphobic shoolmates and this wouldn't have happened if she hadn't found a community online. \s

@dekkia
I don't feel great telling Brinna Ghey's mother that she's wrong, but if teenage murderers are getting radicalised into transphobia online, it's material that was put there by adults and legitimised by adults across the press. And if we're not going to hold them to account first, then any claimed benefits of a social media ban will never be realised, ever.

@Rhodium103 Ester Ghey is acting as if her daughter died from cyber-bullying. Which isn't even remotely close to true.

I absolutely don't want to downplay those deaths, but to her Brianna died when she came out and that's disgusting.

@Rhodium103
Tangential but there was a leaked Zoom call doing the rounds a few years ago of Musk when he first joined twitter with the tech staff, and one of the participants politely pressing Musk on what he meant by the buzz-words he kept throwing out and to explain exactly what he wanted them to do in terms actual systems related tasks.

It ended exactly like the convo above - Musk at a loss for words then a stream of ad hominems.
