Today was the Victorian government budget day. I was really hoping there would be something for active transport, but I did assume if there was then it would have been part of an announcement last week.

It looks like there is nothing for active transport at all in this budget.

Those in the know have said there was only $3.6m allocated to two small Strategic Cycling Corridors projects for the entire of Victoria.

We should expect an announcement about these projects next week.

Bicycle infrastructure is cheap, but it's not that cheap. This is fucked!

In other news, they allocated $5m to inspect and enforce petrol prices at petrol stations.

@jessta Just desperately hoping that when the (literal) dust settles on the North East Link project there will actually be some usable cycling infrastructure in this area again.

@nickzoic yeah, hopefully. But freeway aligned cycling infrastructure is the most expensive and least useful cycling infrastructure.

It's largely only useful for recreational or long distance commuters which are a vanishingly small number of people.

@jessta I live in Watsonia so long distance commuters is me 🙂 If it hooks up to the Main Yarra Trail properly it could really change the maths on commuting from here too ...
@nickzoic i mean that most people aren't willing to ride 20km which is what NorthEast Link related cycling infrastructure is oriented around.
I'm much more interested in whether it's easy and safe to ride to the Watsonia train station or local shops from a 3km radius.
@jessta Yeah, yeah, I gotcha. Hopefully all the local stuff will be improved too.
