Artificial Intelligence - Retina South Africa

Imagine receiving a 50-page report full of  tables and charts that your screen reader just can't navigate properly. A few years ago, that document might have stayed out of reach. Today, AI changes  everything.

@GrahamDowns so it's okay to stop thinking about making things accessible because impaired people can just use a virtual moron that may or may not become paid at any point and may or may not mislead them?

Fuckin' jolly, I tell ya.

@witix Nobody said it was okay to stop worrying about making things accessible. I'm visually impaired, so I'm a big proponent of making stuff accessible (both in the virtual and physical worlds).

But for as long as certain things continue to remain unaccessible, AI will be able to help.

@GrahamDowns so even assuming that AI isn't made by fascist technobros, aren't you concerned it might just be wrong even if not on purpose? Probably won't matter much if it screws up at describing something non-essential like a summer photo from your acquaintance, but I'm pretty certain there's scenarios where it could harmfully mislead you?

And what if it becomes paid without any warning? Don't know what your material situation is, but regardless of that it feels like that comic about paying a subscription for breathing, if you've heard of it

@witix all valid concerns, but still better than nothing if you're completely blind and alone and need to interpret a document or navigate a website that your screen reader can't interpret, or otherwise get something done urgently.

If it helps people be more independent and feel more like valuable, productive, contributing members of society, even a little bit, then I'm all for it, to be honest.
