The last couple of days some contractors have been busy getting their grass cutting done before No Mow May starts. I can’t fathom the stupidity of all this anymore.

At least they were happy for me to take the grass clippings off their hands.

I’ll dry the grass before mulching the growing beds with it and/or use as greens for mixing with sawdust, wood chips and horse manure for making hot compost.

@Broadfork wait, what's no-mow May??

Edit: oh, I see, it's a UK-thing 🤔

#NoMowMay was created in the UK, and American lawns and bees aren’t the same. So if you’re an American and really want to help, it’s better to add native plants and flower beds to your garden. https://theconversation.com/its-ok-to-mow-in-may-the-best-way-to-help-pollinators-is-by-adding-native-plants-229426

@flaki @TheConversationUS Thanks for the article. It’s important we try to do what’s best for our local ecosystems.

Plantlife say the UK has lost 97% of its flower rich meadows since the 1930’s.

“The No Mow Movement is More than Just May. May is only the beginning! We think of No Mow May as a starting point, a way to dip your toe into a new way of caring for your lawn. It’s all about mowing our lawns less for longer – and we would love to see lawns managed for nature all year round!”#NoMowMay

@Broadfork totally!

As an owner of two fluffy dogs and a newfound owner of a small plot in rural Estonia I am still trying to figure out a suitable, ecological lawn regime that isn't a hot bed for parasites (we have a *ton* of ticks everywhere) but is gentle with other insect life, like bees.

@Broadfork
Wie used to dry the cuttoffs to.
But in Ireland it is nearly impossible to do so.
Anyways, we do not mow our lawn and life is slowly finding its way back.

Sadly we have got terminated our tenancy, so sooner or later everything will be devastated again 😟

@Derek_DIY Sorry to hear of your changed circumstances. Well done for doing what you can.

Even a little mulch goes a long way to protect the soil. We have no problems drying grass here at the moment.
