OMG, the Mavericks League is actually playing some /away games/ this season!
The league is a former #MinorLeague #baseball team, disenfranchised by #MLB in 2020, then reorganized as an independent, 4-team league by turning its alternative identities into separate teams. They've been playing all their games at the hilariously named "Roto-Rooter Park" in Keizer, and this year they're finally touring (not far) by using Spec Keene Park in downtown Salem.
One of their teams is the Portland Mavericks; their use of the name of the famous PDX independent team of the 1970s is purely marketing hooey. They're not based in PDX, and many members of the original roster scoff at the use of the name. They're not /THE/ Portland Mavericks, they're just /A/ Portland Mavericks.
Personally, I like clubs named after historical teams, even if the originals played within living memory. Still, it does feel a little like putting on a cape and saying you're Dracula.
