Comprehensive security is founded on a good state of the environment

Climate change, biodiversity loss and the crossing of tipping points in the Earth System are among the most serious security risks in the coming decades.(1) A deteriorating environment weakens people’s living conditions, acts as a driver of conflict, or may itself be a consequence of warfare. A good state of the environment is a prerequisite for societal and human wellbeing.

The (mostly Russian) threats to (European) "hard" security and #democracy that I too post so much about here is very real. But so are the #climate crisis, #biodiversity crisis, ... the whole environmental and social #polycrisis. We can't lose sight of that. We have to work many problems at once.

The recommendations of the brief are to the point and easy to agree with: 1: #Environment and #nature must be firmly integrated into comprehensive security models in #Finland and elsewhere through concrete actions and by strengthening expertise across the #security sector.

The proposals to restore & #rewild wetlands and forests along Europe's eastern borders are excellent examples of win-win-win investments in #defence, #nature / #biodiversity & #sustainability. There may be others. I can think of remote sensing as one example. bsky.app/profile/jmko...

Another win-win-win would be to stop, one way or another, the decrepit "shadow fleet" oil tankers. They are ticking environmental time bombs in the delicate and already badly damaged #Baltic Sea ecosystem. AND they fuel the Kremlin's genocidal war in #Ukraine & campaign to undermine #democracy.

The final advice is also spot on: "Collaboration is needed to advance sustainability transformation and security together." Our amazing ability to cooperate is the only true human superpower. It's also the one power autocracies can never exploit as well as democracies. Our secret weapon. Use it.
