Rolling through my bird photos for the month, those that show up at our bird feeders. The Steller's Jay always a favorite. They have personality. They come for the peanuts, grab one and fly away with it to hide it. #nature #birds #photography #jay #StellersJay #PNW #birdphotography

I've got Steller's in the back yard and California Scrub Jays in the front yard and they mostly keep clear of each other. The Steller's mostly ignore me, though they seem to understand I'm not a threat. The scrub jays have figured out I'll share snacks on occasion, so they're super friendly.
@TheGreatLlama The CA Scrubs don't commonly range up to SW SnohoCo where I am. Pierce Co and south King Co seems to be as far north as they get in the Puget Lowland. This photo shows both birds in lower Icehouse Cyn-San Gabriel Mtns soCal at an elevation of 5000 ft. That's right about where chaparral favored by Scrubs transitions up into coniferous forest favored by Steller's. I was down there May 2022 on a work trip, goofing off with a hike in the mountains.

@brownsbay
Nice, they posed together!

I'm on the Columbia river sort of near the coast. We've got a lot more of the scrub jays than we used to, but they seem to stick to the low valleys. My Dad lives a few miles away from me, but at around 400 feet above sea level. He never sees them at his place.

@brownsbay look at that bright-eyed beauty
@brownsbay our local Steller's Jays usually take about 8 peanuts, stuffed in their crop, and fly away to stash them. Then they come back again.
@flipper The neighborhood crow gangsters show up and hog all the peanuts until I walk out and chase them away. They come right back when the coast is clear. They think they own the place.
@brownsbay ours just bring their chicks for feeding - so we give them half a handful and then they fly off - very civilized imo.
@brownsbay I live on the wrong side of the continent but I can't get enough of these birds
@brownsbay
I love them so much, sometimes with frustration. 😏🖤💙 We’ve been through a lot over the years.
@brownsbay such a great shot… I only see them at the coast, but love it when they show up! Inland I only ever see regular blue jays.
