So I’m finally mainlining Linux. Except for Unreal Engine (boo)…

I’m fairly sure that now Epic are “skint” they’re gonna flip the switch and UE6 will be UEFN, at which point *poof*.

Year of the Linux Desktop

A quick run-down on what I've been working on this week!

Triple Eh? Development Blog
@k Cool. I reckon my next laptop later this year is a beefy Xubuntu ThinkPad.

@nivrig yeah been following your thoughts. Part of the reason why I posted.

I’ve just bought myself a framework desktop for the day job, which I can hide behind my monitor and get my laptop back.

@k @nivrig got one as my...err...desktop computer too and a Framework 13 as a laptop. Love them both.

About to upgrade some parts of the 13 with the new stuff they announced yesterday.

@didier @nivrig I only recently upgraded the 13 to the AMD SKU so I’m gonna have to sit out the pro upgrade for a bit.

@k @nivrig Oh I'm keeping the AMD, I'm just getting the black bezel and the fancy screen :)

It is pretty damn cool to be able to do that when they release new stuff by the way.

@didier @k Framework is an option, but I'd need them to update the 16 like they've just done the 13. I'd use it as a laptop often and I want the bigger screen. Intel X9 388H would be tempting.
@didier @nivrig I just bought a new screen for mine when I bumped up the CPU. The battery’s tempting. Don’t want a touch screen.
@k @didier Does "bumping the cpu" mean a new motherboard?

@nivrig @didier yeah, you get a little main board. I went from Intel to AMD so I also changed RAM and Wifi module at the same time.

You can get little plastic cases for just the main board, I keep meaning to get one to turn the old one into a mini server :D

@k @didier Nice. I'm not in an immediate rush, so I'll keep an eye on Framework 16 updates as well.

@nivrig @k I'm pretty sure 16 pro will be coming up next.

The bigger battery for the 13 requires the new pro chassis which is the only thing that's not swappable without changing more stuff.

@k real game devs switching to Linux? Windows 11 might just be a good thing for the world after all! 😁
@ric My game dev started on Linux :D

@k ohhh!

Surprising how uncommon this is really, considering it's the O/S for nerds.

There was a good crowd around PyGame, before Pete Shinners went to Blizzard. I did graphics for a few of the early PyGame releases. And they're still using my logo. :D

Civil - Open Source Wargaming

@k oh that is cool. I'd not heard of PyGame before, but then I'm not a Python coder. Looks like they started out around the same time as BlitzBasic so I went down a totally different path when I stumbled onto that!
