@TheAdmin

I see that mastodon.cloud is running 4.1.24 and that a v4.4 series is available. Are you planning to upgrade this instance? Is there a place where you are posting about this so I could learn about your planned timelines?

Thanks

@TheAdmin Thank you for the upgrade to 4.2.29. Are there plans to bring the server up to the stable 2.5.x series?

@cceddie @TheAdmin

🤣 Their "upgrade" is from 2 years ago.

https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/releases/tag/v4.2.9

The current stable branch is 4.5.9 which they should move to since 4.6 is already a nightly alpha (meaning coming soon).

@Linux @cceddie @TheAdmin It’s not a good idea to run versions so old. I recommend keeping things up to date. Although, Mastodon’s security history is not bad.

@housepanther @cceddie @TheAdmin

4.2.9 is bad because the 4.2.x branch is discontinued and has a security flaw.

The last 4.2.x branch was 4.2.29

https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/releases/tag/v4.2.29

They "upgrade" to a new version by "downgrading" to a new security flaw. But more importantly, they are still using discontinued software because both 4.1.x and 4.2.x are no longer is supported.

4.3.x will stop receiving updates in 2 week (May 6, 2026). The last version is 4.3.22.

Although Mastodon may release a 4.3.23 just to patch up any last things, before discontinuing the product. But that is not guaranteed, and you're still relying on software no longer supported in 2 week.

4.4.x already cautions people to use 4.5, because 4.6 the next major release is soon

I am WELL AWARE of how old the 4.2.9 branch is. But I have yet to hear back from the admins about a plan for getting up to date. To upgrade, but not upgrade to current is a puzzling choice.

@cceddie @housepanther @TheAdmin

Its not a puzzling choice, because realistically, you have no choice — you must upgrade.

The new software has features that will not communicate with older versions. Plus, the old version has known security bugs.

If they’re unwilling or unable to upgrade, Mastodon Dot Cloud is not being properly managed or secured. They will continue to be de-federated.

It really comes down to existing within the Fediverse or not, and hoping you’re not hacked

@Linux @housepanther @TheAdmin

I do wish that the admin would communicate *something* about why they are so far behind. I have been procrastinating moving servers, but the non-upgrade (and significant performance degradation) is the push that I needed.

Hoping that our conversation and tags can at least get some attention to the matter

@cceddie

Their lack of communication is one of their biggest problems and why many sites have defederated and disconnected from Mastodon Dot Cloud.

A scammer, troll, or spammer would join your site, people would report the content, and nothing would happen. Worse, it would keep happening. Mastodon Dot Cloud has, for the past year, become known as a revolving door of trash and nonsense, and the whole time there’s been no proof anyone cared.

I’m surprised they’re finally upgrading the site — slowly over days — but that’s part of the problem. It shows the same pattern: no action or long delays.

8 days, and they’re right back where they started with discontinued software.

Mastodon.Cloud has upgraded to 4.3.22, the last 4.3.x release, which will be end of life in 8 days.

4.3.22 also has documented security bugs, so they’re still running a version that isn’t fully secure.
