Was führte zur OnlyOffice Entscheidung ?

I don't understand the decision to use OnlyOffice as the basis for Euro-Office. Here are my thoughts:

- Its Russian origin and ties

- Additional conditions to the APGL = crippled open source

- The ODF file format is not natively supported, and the ODF format exported by OnlyOffice is not fully compatible. However, ODF is a mandatory standard in public administration.

What led to the OnlyOffice decision?

@ChaP @nextcloud
I just read their latest blog post, and they are working toward full ODF format support. They are also cleaning the code base to translate Russian code comments in English and to "clean up and refactor code that has outdated dependencies or binary blobs". As for choosing OnlyOffice instead of LibreOffice (or Collabora) as a base, I guess it’s because OnlyOffice looks more modern (more like MS office) and may make it easier to convert users from MS Office.

As for the license, the added rule in the OnlyOffice license which blocked users from forking the project has been removed in Euro-Office and it is backed by Nextcloud which is itself truly opensource. (https://isitreallyfoss.com/projects/nextcloud/)
Nextcloud: Is it really foss?

@ChaP hey there!

1. What matters is it's open source software. The Euro-Office team is working on the code to make sure it's a reliable and transparent product. You can read about the current state of things and what's next in the article.

2. The licensing question is explained in detail here: https://nextcloud.com/blog/euro-office-license-compliance-and-what-open-source-means/

3. ODF compatibility is something we are currently working on, as mentioned in the article as well.

So @clero you are right in your findings, thanks!

Euro-Office reviewed the terms in the ONLYOFFICE codebase and found contradictions. We explain the legal basis, what we removed, and why.

@nextcloud @clero

Thank you for the answer and the detailed explanation.

@nextcloud @ChaP @clero Couldn't you have come up with a better name than "Euro-Office"? I know ONLYOFFICE wasn't a great name either, but... competing for terrible product names isn't a competition worth winning... 😅
@neal @nextcloud @ChaP There are already LibreOffice, OnlyOffice and Microsoft Office, so I don't know how they could have found something better than Euro-Office. There's also Google Docs and Proton Docs so Maybe "Euro docs" but it's definitively not better 😅.
