How does Mastodon find an icon associated with a link that you put in a post?

#mastodon #activitypub

@khleedril Can you give us an example, a screenshot maybe?

The short answer is, it fetches content from the URL which the creator of its content puts in special meta-tags. But I don't know what you mean by "icon" here.

@negative12dollarbill That's as I thought, but what meta-tags is it looking for?

@khleedril
I think this is the detail you need:

Open Graph protocol

The Open Graph protocol enables any web page to become a rich object in a social graph.

@negative12dollarbill Another protocol. It used to be that the good thing about protocols is that you can choose which ever one suits you. But with #indieweb and #smallweb you have to use ALL the protocols at once.

@khleedril
The whole thing was invented more or less at random by Facebook and Twitter and only later made official.

Is there a specific thing you want Mastodon to find when it creates link previews for your site?
