"Tests of intelligence and brain function showed the same results whether or not people drank fluoridated water growing up, a highly anticipated, long-term study found.

The new research, published Monday in the respected Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is the first to measure community water fluoridation exposure during childhood in the U.S. and any potential impact on cognition up to age 80."

Fluoride in drinking water has no effect on IQ or brain function, major study shows

Despite the claims of RFK Jr. and others, tests of intelligence and brain function were the same whether or not people drank fluoridated water while growing up, new research shows.

@bich There are so many people I would like to share this with, but it's probably best to just let them Find Out.

@dnkboston

In the meantime, children primarily from low-income families will have to deal with tooth decay and limited dental access.

@bich Dental health can be managed with a low sugar whole foods diet. It's just that most families in this country struggle to afford that. Fluoride is a bargain for governments.
@bich ... In case I'm unclear, I support municipal fluoride!

@dnkboston

I would love for everyone to be able to afford fruits and vegetables and have time to cook at home. Unfortunately, the big farm bill prioritizes certain crops and ends up subsidizing less healthy foods, artificially making them cheaper.

@bich We would be a different country if we subsidized produce for human consumption.
@bich I am old enough to remember that during the height of the Cold War idiots were calling fluoridation a "communist plot". Fluoridation has been used in the US for 80 years now, and has been proved beneficial and safe.
Kennedy Jr's brain function has definitely been damaged by chemicals, none of them being fluoride.

@bich

Now let’s test the consequences of population subjected to substandard healthcare or primary education

@bich my mother gave us fluoride tablets when we were kids in the 1970’s NZ. My dentist said that was the best thing she could have done for our teeth. I’m nearly 58 and I haven’t drunk dairy milk for 55 years and my dentist said those fluoride tablets I chewed in the 1970’s did wonders for my teeth health.

@MaraEmily

Sure is a shame that RFK Jr.'s HHS and FDA are trying to remove fluoride tablets from the market, thus removing parents' choice to supplement.

@bich @ewen it’s great that we have this study. Now, we need a more pointed one - correlating people’s preference for fluorinated or unfluorinated drinking water with IQ

@bich I used to do volunteer work in more rural communities. One time I traveled with a team to West Virginia in a rural part of the state.

So we’re looking at an intersection of no fluoridated water and almost no access to dental care. It was a whole medical team providing free dental services so people came out in droves.

By the end of a week there were close to four thousand extractions, most were abscessed. Hundreds upon hundreds of bottles of antibiotics were handed out. There were people who had teeth literally rotting in their mouths. No fluoride is terrible but when it overlaps in areas with poor access to healthcare, it’s catastrophic.

@bich positive link does exist for iodized salt though ...

@bich This story does nothing but validate the "debate" with its framing.

It must be time to stop reading "the news." I'm about to have a fucking stroke from all the bullshit.
