I only started to write when I was around 14 or 15 (I was more interesting in drawing up to that point). So a good 20+ years of writing. I remember vividly what got me into it: a school assignment where we were to write a story with a historical twist. I ended writing something about Lancelot Du Lac, and was surprised to get complimented by my teacher. After that, I was hooked. For the rest of Secondary School, I spent most of my time in class writing stories and poems. A lot of which I still have (I don't have the Lancelot one anymore, unfortunately). I got into fanfiction much later in the game, in my late 20s and am much less prolific there.
