“We really don’t have a mechanism to fund the need for conservation of our rare species or those species that aren’t hunted and fished,” said Kristin Hall, supervisor for the Nongame Wildlife Program. “Things like a tax checkoff or direct donation are the one way that we can generate revenue for this important work.”

Fascinating account. I attended a lecture of Henderson’s a couple years ago, hosted by the Izaak Walton League in Brooklyn Park. He’s a first rate conservation biologist and public speaker.

I marvel at the recovery of Trumpeter Swans. My grandpa (a nature and travel filmmaker) spotted one in Yellowstone during a 1975 trip I took with him; he couldn’t contain his excitement even though the bird was ~half mile away. Was truly a rarity. Now, they’re everywhere.
