I'm considering buying one of the modern MPCs (One+, Live 3, etc), and I have a question:

Would I have issues using a new MPC without access to a Windows or Mac PC? I only have Linux machines, and I don't want to rely on Wine for anything crucial.

It looks like firmware updates can happen via wifi or file transfer. I don't really care about the virtual instrument/plugin side of things and would be using it as a sampler/sequencer.

Context:

I've been using the MPC Sample, and while I love it, it's not able to do the larger-scale things I want to do. The S2400 is absolute shit at handling samples >2MB, which are pretty crucial to what I'm trying to do with a sampler atm, so just looking at other options. I was surprised by how much I love the new little MPC, so wondering if a bigger MPC could work for me.

NB: if you ever build a sampler, maybe put more than 64MB of RAM in it. WTF.

@alisynthesis

Hey, I have a few MPCs, including the keyboard job, a Live II and an MPC XL, anything I can help with, just ask.

@Jyoti yay!! I'm digging into the manuals atm, will probably take you up on that. Thank you!
@Jyoti do you know off the top of your head if you can set different pads/samples to accept messages from different MIDI channels?

@alisynthesis

Hmm - I don't see why not as you'd just assign the different samples to different tracks/instruments and give them different channels?

afair, the MPCs don't re-channellise incoming MIDI but I'm not next to one right now to check.

@Jyoti gotcha, that seems to be how it works on most samplers. One thing I love about the S2400 is its MIDI flexibility. On any pad, you can completely alter how the incoming and outgoing MIDI works. It's very cool and useful for some of the stranger things I want to do!
