"What photography actually gave me — and I didn't know I needed it until I had it — is self-reflection and self-discovery. When I raise the camera, something shifts. My breathing slows. My heart rate steadies. The noise that runs constantly in the background goes quiet. I am present in the moment.

Most of us move through the world on a kind of autopilot. We see without looking. We're present without being attentive. Photography broke me of that habit early, and I've never recovered — and I mean that as gratitude.

I didn't set out to find mindfulness. I found it through a viewfinder. And I've been going back to it ever since."

@RaffKarva A fabulous piece of writing Raff, it resonated with me so much, thank you.

@RaffKarva Thank you, your post resonates. Gaining skill in photography requires one to be here now. It’s the ultimate in presence, a quiet reverence of awe.

I haven’t used an SLR or darkroom in decades, but I just “won“ an expired role of film, and I’m so eager to use it. (1/2)

Having to go through thousands of worthless photos to find a gem is a major deterrent to spray and pray with a DSLR. I’ve become very selective in clicking the shutter, and experience is the best teacher in instinctively knowing how to compose a photo and adjust settings.

I’m curious what happens at the next level of expertise! (2/2)

Thank you for this and sorry for the late response! Your comment got buried in my notifications.

That expired film sounds like a great find. There's something special about working with film you didn't choose for yourself. I'd love to see how it turns out.

@RaffKarva Well, I've not been on Mastodon, so I'm late too. When the film arrives, and I've used and developed it, if there's anything worth sharing I'll be posting it. It's been soooo long since I've posted any photography, over a year, eek!
