i really hope 40 years from now people will look at banning kids from social media the way people now look at the satanic panic of the 80s

@eniko except that social media really IS designed by researchers to be maximally addictive, so I'm not sure that compares fully.

Of course, that part should be banned for everyone.

@larsmb @eniko

Satanic Panic doesn't have a list of victims, but I got this in 2 seconds of searching.

@JoeHenzi @larsmb @eniko I don't think anyone here is arguing that we should allow Facebook & other corporate social media free rein.
Having everyone submit their biometric data & government ID to these companies will help the companies, not users/victims. (reliable data for their algorithms, and selling such data onwards to brokers will make them even more money) This is why Meta, Google,… themselves are lobbying FOR such legislation. It's regulatory capture for their unethical business model.

@pmdj @larsmb @eniko

No where did I mention ID or advocate age controls. You're mislead in thinking there are two options by social media addicts.

@JoeHenzi Well, @eniko specifically talked about being against banning children from social media, and you disagreed. It's difficult to see how you would ban children from doing things unless you verify people's age.
I'm very much wary of banning children from things. Instead, we need to punish, disincentivise, and if necessary, ban the bad actors. They are doing a lot of harm to society at large, not just children. (To be clear, I'm talking about cracking down on Big Tech.)
@pmdj @eniko I didn't even mention banning children from social media. I said the concept that social media doesn't bring harm is a complete and utter lie.

Wow I got blocked for NOT disagreeing with someone.

This place is broken, this is proof social media doesn't work. You pretend it's to connect - it's to create a cognitive bias bubble.

THIS IS NOT SOCIETY THIS IS AN ABERRATION
