Who uses #DeltaChat and what do you think of it?

Also, any #HomeLab'ers?

There are so many p2p e2ee chat thingies these days I don't have time to look at one let alone compare them. 😱

I like that #DeltaChat seems to have a community that supports it with cash and relays. But is it any good?!

Last I tried was #Jami which kindof worked but at least one mate had problems with it and these things need to work for everyone.

@happyborg I'm using netcloud talk with my reluctant family... i've been looking. to try delta chat but each switch is costly

@happyborg the biggest adavntage of Delta for me and my friends is that you can use government-backed email relays to communicate with e2ee even during white-list internet shutdowns. I am looking into setting up my own relay, but it wouldn’t really help due to the nature of whitelist shutdowns.

it’s not the safest solution due to metadata being available to the authorities, but it’s much more secure for casual conversation than local alternatives that are in the “white list”.

@happyborg it is not completely #p2p, some parts are p2p others decentralized (well actually kind of distributed because you don't depend on a single node but have interchangeable relays and can even use several of them at the same time to avoid single point of failure) this hybrid approach gives you a very powerful offline-first tool while avoiding the "everyone needs to be online" of p2p apps like #Jami

it has in-chat mini-apps like collaborative text pads, to-do lists, shopping lists, multi-player games etc.

it has good multi-device and multi-profile support, and it is the best option out there in terms of security, usability and freedom, the UI is pretty much on the level of WhatsApp, Telegram etc.

it has "channels" like Telegram that allow you to broadcast to subscribers, but all end-to-end encrypted and without dependence in a server, so it is uncensorable

@adbenitez awesome, that's really helpful thanks.

@adbenitez @happyborg

Just to confirm: you're talking about #DeltaChat ?

@klu9 yep

@adbenitez

Thanks, didn't realize it had those additional possibilities
