This Independent Lens, “The Tallest Dwarf,” hit home a little. I mean, I’m well over five feet tall, I don’t qualify, but I had a late growth spurt, believe it or not, I surely qualified as a kid.
.
The protagonist in the film says the kids called her Oompa Loompa - I was the Munchkin in grade school. Not that I have the achondroplasia (spelling? I’ll edit), nor am I a pituitary dwarf, I’m not sure this is a term, if I qualified, I’d be a Thalidomide dwarf, shortened limbs.
.
They talked about the word, a slur, “disproportionate,” and argued, the pituitary ones were excepted, it referred to the achondroplasic (again, I’ll check that) folks, and they argue they have lovely proportions, just different from that of tall people.
.
Well, I guess the Thalidomide folks don’t get to argue about that, we can be disproportionate to the point of severe disability, obviously (if perhaps less obvious with me than most). What is disabling about most dwarves is simply their size, not their “proportions.” I don’t even qualify in adulthood, but I have proportion problems.
.
It’s a terrific film, I recommend it, it has themes for everyone who isn’t da Vinci’s perfect human, nothing about us without us. There’s the same issues about “cures,” do people really want to erase a type of people just so the corporations don’t have to make smaller chairs?
