This is why virtually no housing is being built in #Ontario.

Rather than having a reliable, predictable process for obtaining permitting and planning approval, #DougFord has instead politicized the entire process, resulting in far, far FEWER homes being built as developers abandon the prescribed approvals process and instead seek political favour to build over the objections of even local residents who are supportive of moderate density increases.

Ford will trumpet that no administration in Ontario has issued more Ministerial Zoning Orders for the purposes of housing development, but is that a good thing?

He's turned a house building assembly line into a bespoke and craft process that is more profitable for developers but results in far fewer homes being built.

Doug Ford’s government has sent mixed signals about the planned height of this controversial Oakville condo project. Here’s why residents are concerned

Ontario issued minister’s zoning orders to fast-track the development, which would bring more than 6,800 new homes near the Oakville GO Station.

@evdelen why would the provincial government ever be involved in approving construction of buildings the province isn't itself commissioning?

The province should approve a building code, the municipalities should write zoning bylaws, and any proposal that complies with both should get a rubber stamp approval with no chance of a NIMBY veto.

@dragonfrog

Because, sadly, Municipalities are creatures of the Province, and so the Province can overrule them, which for people like Ford and Flack is a huge flag that reads "corruption possible here".

It's gotten to the point, just like with the OMB of old, that developers file applications with cities merely as a pro-forma gesture to get the process started so that the minister can intervene.

Although the Ford Administration remains accessible (just like Trump, they conflate transparency with accessibility, the latter of which they only undertake when the media coverage is positive), they are the most secretive administration in Ontario history, going to court and losing twice to prevent public disclosure of documents which undoubtedly provides additional evidence of corruption, and now in the process of passing retroactive legislation to prevent that disclosure.

Autocrats dismantle democratic institutions and concentrate power in the hands of a few.
