It's a beautiful morning and I'm considering renting a sod cutter and taking out all the grass on my front lawn. Not today. But soon. I'm plotting. Take out the grass, order a truckload of dirt, level it, lay some decorative rocks/concrete tiles, plant some indigenous plants and some veggies in the front yard... #gardening #yeg
@marewrites I did that about five years ago and don't regret a thing. Now my front yard is one big flower garden with absolutely no grass.
@bbsmooth if you have time, I would love your top 3 tips or suggestions or lessons learned from your experience. Right now it seems daunting, but I’m highly motivated.
@marewrites The best thing I did was having about the top foot of soil completely dug out and replaced with a very high quality soil. The native soil in my neighborhood has so much clay in it that it gets rock hard during the summer. Hopefully you already have good soil.
@marewrites I also installed a drip line watering system with micro sprinklers. Makes it easy to water only where you want.
@marewrites And a good path through your garden. Mine is made of small crushed gravel, but it's only a few feet wide. I probably should have made it a little wider as it is hard to push a wheelbarrow or yard debris can through it in full bloom.
@marewrites remember seeing a front yard on my street in Edmonton where they had done that, and honestly it was the prettiest yard around. I remember thinking we should ask them how they did that.
@johncormier there are some pretty impressive examples of rocks and moss and vegetable gardens in my area. And also the astroturf/fake grass carpet stuff 😁
