In local elections in the UK the Electoral Comission says:
“In the event of a tie, then a candidate is selected by the drawing of lots (i.e., a method of selection by chance such as tossing a coin or picking a name out of a hat).”
I’m sorry. What!? First past the post is a dreadful system.

@aarblaster Even non-FPTP electoral systems have tie breaking mechanisms that fall back to selection by coin toss or similar. See this article about tie breaking in the single transferable vote system, for example.

I think there are much, much stronger reasons to criticise FPTP, and that we should focus on the strongest arguments available.
