Weird gig alert: my wife and I are going to see Alton Brown tonight. His “Good Eats” show was a staple of my came-home-late-from-the-Knitting-Factory-and-sure-I’ll-have-another-drink-and-watch-TV -until-3-AM era, and Brown has always stood head and shoulders above the (mostly despicable) crowd of celebrity chefs. Not 100% sure what to expect, but I’m hoping for some combination of cooking demo and ribald stand up comedy.

Aaaaaand.... he was great! Brown's act (almost two hours, no intermission) was equal parts comedy, history, and science, delivered with the showmanship of an experienced magician. The set was well-rehearsed, but he's also skillful enough to switch gears quickly with hilarious clapbacks for boisterous audience members. For the cooking portion of the night, he usurped what I imagine were everyone's expectations by making ant, scorpion, and grasshopper stir fry, and... trout ice cream. Glad I didn't get picked as the audience volunteer for either of those.

His tour lumbers up and down the east coast for the rest of April, with more dates expected in the fall. Highly recommended if you're a fan. https://www.altonbrownlive.com/
