I never tried a peer-to-peer messaging app. How well does it work with multiple devices? I.e. I have #Jabber/#XMPP both at home and at my workplace. The devices are never switched on at the same time, until I clone myself 🙂 Still, thanks to the (trustworthy, self-hosted) server, all incoming and outgoing messages are synchronized. I wonder, if/how a peer-to-peer IM can do that.

I wonder how they do this? If you get a message on one device, while the second is switched off and you reply, then you switch the first device off, later switch on the second device — how can your reply reach the second device, if there is no server who does the magic? I'm amazed, that it works!
