Is this a deliberate thing?

Grocery chains putting an item on special on the day of their specials changes then no more than 5 minutes later listing the item as "Not available". I've seen coles do this numerous times and now witnessed woolies do it too..

Seems to be so they can "say" they have things on special without actually having to sell anything at a discounted price or lose money. That's dishonest conduct to me.

Is a variation on "bait and switch"? The idea is customer needs to buy something in category X, but item Cheap isn't available, so custemer will buy what they need even if they must pay more.
@dancingtreefrog but in this case it would make the customer shop elsewhere, as it's not available at that store currently, so it's ultimately self-defeating for the company. Especially if it's a core ingredient a lot of the other groceries depend on..

@CanvasesByPeter Customer might not shop elsewhere for it, discouraged or constricted by personal time limits, transportation, or the simple inconvenience of having to go somewhere else.

Even if it's a core ingredient, if the retailer is "out of" Brand Advertised Cheap, they most likely have some Other Brand Not So Cheap in the same category...
