> A future update will introduce safeguards to prevent firmware not released by #Commodore from being loaded.

This is a hard no-go for future #C64U recommendations from me, if this means third-party firmware will eventually be locked out.

Others have suggested it might be hiding it behind a 'dev' mode, in which case, okay fine.

But if this really is a plan to lock us out of our rather expensive hardware, well... I don't think the 'new Commodore' needs that kind of black eye on their reputation. They'd basically be dead to me at that point.

I truly hope this is a misread.

(For those unaware, there are some really great third-party patches out there adding all kinds of features.)

EDIT: If we're talking about just light warnings, or even pushing it behind a "developer" page, that's completely fine. But if we're going the route of trying to find ways to keep us from flashing non-standard AT ALL, that's a different story.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume the former.

It would also be completely acceptable to not accept tech support, or expect help, if I'm running alternate firmware. That should be a given. And devs writing code aiming at the C64U (technically should be aiming for native C64, but whatever) would not be expected to "test a bunch of different unofficial firmwares", either. You test under official, and you're done. Those of us wanting to use something other than the official stuff would be left to our own devices (literally).

Since there's apparently been plenty of discussion about this, I'll wait and see what Commodore themselves have to say about it.

@fortyseven why... Why would anyone do this? Make it make sense
