The Institute says those prices still remain elevated today. Economic research out earlier this year shows the higher costs are passed onto Americans at 96%. The unseen cost of tariffs: Trade policy uncertainty. It’s not surprising that the dozens of changes to US tariffs pushed up policy uncertainty to an all-time high in 2025. Why does this matter though? It undermines long-term business planning and investment in the US. 
 What’s also sky high? Tariff-related litigation. On February 20, the Supreme Court made a landmark ruling against tariffs. Before and after this ruling, more than 2,000 importers filed a suit to claw back a refund for more than $160 billion in tariffs paid to the government. Hate to be the bearer of bad news but the manufacturing boom that was promised…it didn’t eventuate. The data shows manufacturing jobs continued declining in 2025, with manufacturers pointing the finger at tariff-induced cost pressures and economic uncertainty.
