The old, saggy-ass elastic bands in the shock mount for my AKG C414 are beyond useless at this point. I recently tried to buy new ones at the local Long & McQuade but they had to do a “special order.” They subsequently phoned me to say the elastics are $19.99 each. So $45.18 all in.
For 2 elastic bands.
So that’s a no.

I see that one of those sketchy Ali Express sites has them for like 6 bucks.
I dunno.

Couldn’t you get some elasticated cord from a local craft shop (what in the UK we’d call a haberdashers)?
@robtherunt Yeah maybe. There’s a video of a guy making his own on youtube but it seems really fussy with melting the bands together. The last thing I want is my mic crashing to the floor because I suck at mending or whatever.

@bgm
Can understand that. I have no idea how the elastics would thread around the frame, but is a simple knot possible? Would look kinda shonky, but then again would also look “hey, I fix my own stuff which is cool”.

(I have no idea what I’m talking about)

@robtherunt @bgm Just came here to say the same thing but couldn't remember the name of those. shops in English... I'm currently being informed that you can get this sort of thing even online for like less than a $/metre.

I don't see a problem with a knot - you might need a few goes to get the right length after you tie the knot, but otherwise a couple of metres and you're set for life.

@Rob @bgm
Haha! I can fix stuff I don’t even use? Amazing!
@bgm @Rob Yeah I bought mine at a fabric store. Tie a couple square knots and you’re good. I think I paid $2

Having had long hair my entire adult life…I use old hair elastics. No joke. Typically two-per-shock mount. They seem to last about a year. I do this because I usually have an extra in my pocket so it's quick.

There is a shockmount at a studio where hair ties didn't fit well so I used some elastic cord I picked up from an arts/crafts/sewing supply store literally three blocks away. I think I bought *40 yards* of it for $3 in 2006 and they're still going through it. It makes me laugh because just about every piece of gear in that studio is Black As The Pit Of The Owner's Soul and that elastic cord is White As the Pure Driven Snow. ;)
