COVID infections are causing drops in IQ and years of brain aging, studies suggest | CBC Radio

Researchers are trying to understand the profound effects of COVID-19 on the brain, looking at how it disrupts the blood-brain barrier, how it affects brain volume, and showing that even a mild case of COVID can lead to the equivalent of seven years of brain aging.

@datum are we sure it isn't neofascist and manosphere propaganda that's been causing the drop in IQ? It really jumped up around the same time as COVID. Maybe a statistician can tease apart the correlations.
@johnefrancis I mean, that specific possibility is unlikely to account for this, since the gender gap in all the post-acute-COVID studies I've seen has not had men doing much worse than women (in fact statistically women had moderately worse odds of neuro sequelae than men, though about the same severity if impacted, in at least one study.

@datum I always have some side-eye for tests like this - published in *2024* and purporting to have a large sample size of people who've never had covid.

I see from the paper the actual tests were conducted between 2020 and 2022, so OK I guess I can see it.

@datum switch the F to a J, for a more realistic cause of those symptoms, and many more.
@PlutonicXT Hello and welcome to the Fediverse! Can you please provide a citation for your claim?
@datum Dystopian thought of the day: once the cognitive damage becomes impossible to ignore, are AI bros and politicians/lobbyists going to sell cognitive surrender as a feature, rather than the poison it is?
@alxndr Oh absolutely! "Relax and let us do the (restaurant picking, book reading, birthday card writing, whatever) for you" is absolutely absolutely a near term marketing pitch
