Well, that was a bust. Replaced the CPU on the motherboard - CPU error light still goes on as soon as it powers up and it's not POSTing - can't even reach the bios.

Apart from replacing the motherboard I can't think of anything else.

feel like an idiot too, because I bought a new graphics card to replace the old one and at the moment it's just a very expensive paperweight.

@trif Might be worthwhile looking for a secondhand motherboard of the same model on ebay or somewhere to replace it with, at least then you can use all the same other hardware..

A couple things to check that could cause this;

- make sure nothing is in any of the USB ports shorting them or having damaged the port (yes, I've seen this cause non-boot on an IBM notebook, bending the pin back into place solved the issue).

- make sure the PSU hasn't gone bad dropping power on a rail or has fried something.
