I needed to read good fiction today and Ryka Aoki’s ‘Light From Uncommon Stars’ was it. Queer, trans, classical music, video game, donuts, sci-fi, fantasy, solar punk, Asian American, SoCal, Star Trek, all at once. And the familiar sights and smells of Monterey Park. So good.

@skinnylatte soooooo goood! loved it!
@skinnylatte I really need to finish that one..
@skinnylatte I discovered that book a while back. It is one of my favorites now! I'm amazed how the descriptions make you taste the food. Like I want some Hainan chicken now.
@napili I especially liked the foods in the book because almost all of them (other than the donuts) are my cultural foods. I rarely read about them in fiction. The choice of donuts as a business for a southeast Asian immigrant / alien also reflects a fun reality in Southern California, that most Vietnamese and Cambodian refugees did end up running donut shops
@skinnylatte yes! I looooooved this book!
@skinnylatte Thanks for this reccommendation. I just finished it. What a great fun book!
@skinnylatte we (my team and I) bought this one for my previous library on the recommendation of a bookstore employee. It's so good! I had a lot of fun with it. Such an eclectic mix, yet it works beautifully.
