If you think there's any chance that law enforcement might ever be interested in the content of your Signal chats, and you don't want them to have access to them, then setting up disappearing messages is necessary but not sufficient. You also need to go into the Signal settings and either disable notifications completely or set them to show "No name or message" so the content won't be capture and preserved in the phone's notification database.

*sigh* of course the typo in the post isn't noticed until it's already been boosted 24 times and it would be rude to the 24 people who already boosted it to spam them by editing the post to correct the typo. Ah, well, such is life in the fast-moving fediverse.
@jik I was not aware of that particular setting. Appreciate the information.
@jik that's something new for me

@jik

Can you turn off notifcation history entirely on iPhone like Android?

(Are notifications still logged somewhere on Android if you turn them off?)

@jik does this mean like any notifications ever received on a phone can just be extracted afterwards because they get saved? is there a place that you can go to check what is saved?

@jik
It's worth remembering that Signal Messenger is not designed to help us get away with crime.

I see its key purpose being to force law enforcement to follow the law, and get warrants before searching property.

Secondarily it also inhibits the surveillance abilities of filthy corporations who don't deserve to have data about us.

I don't condone Apple's design choice here to keep notifications forever, but anyone who thinks Apple has our interests in mind are cult followers.

@TrimTab I am very much worried about people being able to use Signal to "get away with" things that should not be crimes but, under increasingly fascist governments, are being treated as such.
@jik or just get a burner plone. A cheap second hand phone without a sim. Say you use it to make videos of cops breaking the law. Wi-Fi is a thing.

@jik

I mean, also keep in mind that push notifications are generated and sent server side, not on device, so if you’re seeing meaningful content in your notifications Apple (and others) have a copy also. Forensics from  device in hand is just faster than a warrant to corporate entities.

Turn off notifications on everything.

@jik Thanks -- I'm not a 404 subscriber but I did see the alarming headline.
