The Front Range and the Front Line

In April 1952, the Air Defense Command began placing radar stations in towns across North America that had never imagined themselves as the front line of anything.

@gwaldby Since most major US cities are on the coast, wouldn’t we be defenseless against enemy nuclear weapons being brought right into our harbors by one of many thousands of ocean cargo ships. You don’t need an expensive Mach 10 delivery system that everyone can see you develop and test, just a little bit of advance planning and alternative thought. Have we considered that?
Can all the ships out there be tracked on their past routes? Or who rendezvoused with them?
@bouriquet You're right.
@gwaldby And to think of the money we spent on radars, tracking and early warning systems, anti-ballistic missile missiles, etc just so we thought we could all sleep at night in the late 1960s.
