I questioned why they needed that info and the worker denied my suggestion that it was so

they can have ICE waiting for me if I checked anything but American for my nationality.
I said out loud: “I wouldn’t suggest anyone fill this out since the way it’s written can have ICE agents at the gate for anyone who doesn’t select American as their nationality.” The couple sitting across from me immediately gave back their tablets.
And the woman (part of the couple) looked at me, nodded, and winked.
