It always was. Until the Southern Baptist Convention started funding schoolboard campaigns across the country for their hand picked brainwashed lackeys.
Not accurate. Only 9 states + DC require a full year of civics/govt classes.
Many states require just 1 semester (or less). Elementary/middle school civics is often sporadic or embedded in social studies
National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) civics exam reports …
that:
> 22% of 8th graders score proficient in civics (and it gets worse in higher grades)
We have a civics crisis in this country, And MAGA is the result.
When I was school age around 60 years ago in MN it was part of almost every year of my grade school curriculum and specifically required as seperate studies on various state or federal functioning at a couple levels of highschool. I remember it as the requirement many kids groaned over. It was also emphasized in my required american history course in 8th grade. Lots of field trips to things like the local jail with the da, a tour of the voting machines, lecture by the woman voters association, a session of the state legislature to see how laws are made, etc. They actually taught something closer to real history of the competing views over the writing of the constitution than they do now, although it was all from the euro american colonizer view. In that class I had a hard core exam on the US constitution, its amendments, and how the amendments came to be. I understood my civics and democratic responsibilities and constraints very well by graduation.
I homeschooled my kids in the 90's forward because the school curriculums had become downright ignorant. I totally agree part of our problem is the last decades of public school graduates are not only uneducated on our government but have been taught falsehoods about how the law and its administration has evolved as people continued to fight for and expand their citizen rights. There has been a decades long effort to dumb education down by right wing and religious factions.
I guess I should have said it always was required when I was growing up. Not anymore.
@shoq I saw somewhere that Jefferson said a democracy only works with a well educated voting populace. But see Richard Hofstadter on how that whole thing worked out.
If you never read this, it was written in 1964, and explained pretty much what got us to this MAGA hellscape.

Many are proud of their ignorance. Bliss.
