I was just out #gardening and I looked up and there was a big fluffy #raccoon. I thought it hadn’t seen me, so I made a noise. It looked up at me and then stuck its little arm inside the watering can that was beside it. It then busied itself, digging in the mulch. I clapped my hands and it didn’t care. That’s when I started to get a little scared 🤣 My husband came out to shoo him off and he left but then just came back. He even did the thing with the watering can again. #WTF
@PermaSolarPotter are you sure is a "he"? Momma raccoons will spend all of their focus and energy foraging, even in daylight, nothing distracts them from their goal. Nursing makes you very hungry 😅
@marsiposa No. I inadvertently switched from “it” to “he” (a gender-neutral third person pronoun would be helpful—like in my parents’ language Yoruba) and I know little about raccoons except that they normally flee when they see humans.

@PermaSolarPotter oh, I often do the same! Raccoon is also "he" in Spanish, and I switch to "he" instead of "it" (or "she" for other animals) without noticing.

I cannot tell male / female apart either. I did had once a raccoon digging persistently for worms in my yard, including during daylight. It would pay little attention to me. One day I tried to shoo it away.. and as I got close it looked to me like "please, I'm really hungry". I knew the look... I had that same look as I ate through jars of peanut butter just after giving birth. Effectively, a few weeks later there were four very little raccoons tumbling around.

Maybe you'll see little raccoons too!

@marsiposa I will be looking for a raccoon family. We ended up just letting it have its way. It was very large, soft-looking and cute. I’m still fascinated by the watering can move 😂
