EuroVelo

EuroVelo is a network of long distance cycle routes connecting and uniting the whole European continent.

@herbert_tiemens Extremely limited coverage.

@herbert_tiemens I only just learned of its existence this week when I was watching a YouTuber who'd posted a trip through Albania and said he used it.

Albania really really needs coverage of its safer cycle routes.

That said, I'm happy to start exploring how to use EuroVelo.

@herbert_tiemens I mostly use https://cycle.travel (developed by @richardf ) for planning cycle tours for several years now and can wholeheartedly recommend it. I don't really know much about the EuroVelo planner and never used it but it seems like it actually only uses EuroVelo routes which is really limiting tbh.

The best-kept secret of a great ride - find scenic routes with fewer cars.

@heptag0n @herbert_tiemens @richardf Yeah, I came here to say precisely this.
@herbert_tiemens I didn't know it existed, but it seems like a very limited version of #bikerouter . When I tour, I like to get somewhat off the beaten track, and those routes are pretty much the definition of the beaten track.
@herbert_tiemens Because it's limited to only EV routes.
@herbert_tiemens I don't use the route planner. RideWithGPS is my route planning software of choice. I do have the #Eurovelo app for general information about the routes.
@DurableAce @herbert_tiemens I use it only to download the GPX file to OSMand~. OSMand~ does the route and the GPX shows the official #eurovelo path as additional layer.

@herbert_tiemens only sometimes just when I need to get some idea where I can go or which route is possible to take.

When I tried to follow some of the routes I used it only to get the idea how long the section is and then switched to other tools.

For local rides there are much better options for me.

@herbert_tiemens Didn't know it exists, although i was on eurovelo websites multiple times, to find out wich ones cross my home region.

In Osnabrück (perhaps in whole germany) there are no eurovelo signs along the routes... mostly "D" routes to follow.

@herbert_tiemens

No, I actually enjoy getting lost :)

I like to plan my own route, but to be honest, I’m not familiar with the EuroVelo routes, they’re definitely worth trying out.
